Home-hunting takes on an extra dimension when you are a pet-lover and you need somewhere that’s suitable for your dog or cat.
According to data from the RSPCA, Australia has one of the highest percentages of pet ownership in the world.
Some 69% of occupiers have a pet, with 48% owning a dog and 33% having a cat.
Three-quarters of pet owners live in a multi-person household and 85% say their pets make a positive impact on their lives, according to the RSPCA research.
The vast majority (82%) have a household income of more than $100,000.
Our commitment to our pets means their needs are among the top priorities when looking for a home to either buy or rent.
So, whether you’re a buyer or looking for a new place to rent, here are some tips for picking a property that will make your pet happy.
Secure area – A fenced-in yard is essential if you have a dog. And even for cats, a grassy or safe area will make them feel secure. Keep the grass short, as this will add to your pet’s comfort.
Pet-friendly area – Your neighbourhood is also an important consideration. Try to choose an area that has interesting walks and parks, easy access to a veterinary surgery and even pet-friendly cafes. For dog owners, it could be a bonus for you if there is a doggy-day centre nearby.
Beware of stairs – Just like humans, older pets struggle with stairs, especially if they are wooden and slippery.
Stay grounded – Even if you can’t restrict your choice to a single-storey property because of other considerations, make sure your pet can sleep downstairs comfortably and not be distressed at night when you are upstairs.
Carpet capers – We all know accidents happen. Of course, it’s a lot harder to clean up the mess if you have a carpet. However, be aware that floorboards will show dark water stains over time. Laminate floors are easiest for handling this problem.
Natural light – Your pets are going to be happiest when your home has lots of windows to let in natural lights. No doubt you’ve noticed how your pet loves to bask in the warm sunshine, especially in winter.
Restrictions – If you’re intending to either buy or rent an apartment or townhouse, watch for restrictions. Even when you’re buying, some strata rules will put weight and size restrictions on any animals living within the complex.
