Whether you’re about to sell your property or move into a new dream home, your kitchen is one of the most important rooms to get right.
It’s where we cook, eat and meet; and if you think about all the memories created in your home, many will have been made in the kitchen.
From a buyer’s perspective, there is probably no more important room.
So if you are looking to sell your home, this kitchen checklist will help you create a space that is sure to impress buyers.
No packaging
Whether it’s cereal, pasta or flour, put it into containers and throw away the boxes and plastic packaging. It will be easier to find what you need, too. And, of course, always recycle where you can.
Touching distance
Organize your shelves so the items you use most are easiest to find. At my place, that would be the coffee and sugar. Don’t put the bicarbonate of soda front and center. And if you have a fire extinguisher, don’t hide it. It must be within easy reach.
Making it easy
A neat trick is positioning together companion items, like a kettle, coffee, sugar and toaster. It’ll stop you from wandering across the kitchen multiple times just to make a quick breakfast. Another neat coupling is storing plates and cutlery next to the dishwasher.
Zero clutter
Apply a zero-tolerance policy and throw out items you never use or don’t like. Chipped cups and plates should get their marching orders, too.
Vertical vision
Are you using all the space in your cupboards? Could you insert another shelf for more storage? Or perhaps, you could reorganize items so the tallest ones live in the largest cabinets.
Think safety
Many domestic accidents occur in the kitchen, so consider a few safety aspects. Heavy items, like frying pans, baking dishes and woks, should not be stored above eye height in case you drop them.
Let it flow
A golden rule of kitchens is to make the sink, fridge and cooking appliances three points of a triangle in the layout, so they’re not next to each other. It’s a great workflow rule of thumb if you are planning to remodel this space.
