Whether you’re trying to figure out which home improvements will help you sell faster and for more money, or you’re about to move into a new home, it’s never a bad idea to focus your renovation aspirations on the kitchen.
It’s the “nerve-center” of a home – a place where we gather socially and share our day, as well as break bread, of course.
Kitchens that open onto living areas are especially popular with today’s buyers because of the social aspect at a time when too many of us are consumed by our screens.
One element of a kitchen that’s not often discussed is the importance of colour.
Fashions for kitchens move so quickly that you can often pick the last time a kitchen was renovated simply by its palette.
If you’re thinking of renovating your kitchen, or just giving it a little more sparkle, here are the colours that will dominate in 2026:
Deep reds – All the rage five years ago, reds and burgundy are back for 2026. They offer a deep, grounding kitchen experience. But while they are favoured by interior designers today, you should be aware that the last time red was in fashion, the fad lasted no more than two years.
Earthy neutrals – Interior designers are stepping away from clinical whites and the minimalist greys that have been so popular in the past three years. Instead, they’re choosing mushroom-like hues so long as they’re paired with natural stone and wood trims. Alternatives can be soft greens and taupes.
Cream stays – While all-white kitchens are definitely out for 2026, designers say cream can stay because it conveys a warm, nurturing feeling. Again, cream is a classic colour to put with wood cabinets.
Butter for brightness – If you’re going to favour cream, then why not butter! Soft yellows are getting the thumbs-up from designers for cabinet doors, backsplashes and tiles. Choose a yellow that will add some sunshine to your home, but don’t make it too dazzling.
Timeless option – If you’re selling your home in the near future, or moving into a first home that you’ll sell within the next five years or so, you’re better off choosing a classic colour combination. Brochures from paint manufacturers offer an array of options to help you select a timeless combination of colour.
