Preparing your garden to entice buyers

There’s never a bad time to sell a property that’s in a great condition and priced right, but spring and summer definitely warm the hearts and attitudes of buyers.

One of the wonderful aspects of selling your home in summer is that buyers can enjoy your garden in all its colourful glory.

An important part of influencing buyers during an Open Home or private inspection, a garden can make or break a purchasing decision.

There are two stages in preparing your garden before putting your home on the market. Firstly you must take care of the basics: cut back overgrown plants; ensure windows are clear of foliage; mow the lawn and feed it if it looks unhealthy; fix any cracks in the driveway and footpath and, repaint the front of the home if it’s weathered.

With the basic tasks completed, these tips will help showcase your garden as a thing of beauty.

Knowing the difference

Perennials have short bloom cycles but will grow back each year. Annuals burst into colour for longer periods but will be gone forever by the end of summer. In terms of value, perennials are more expensive but always work out cheaper in the long term.

Splash of colour

As you’re selling, a generous sprinkling of colourful annuals will make the greatest impact on your garden.

Low-maintenance

Knowledgeable buyers will look favourably on perennials. They require only seasonal pruning and need regular watering only during dry periods.

Create a buzz

Perennials attract pollinators, so maybe you’ll have bees, insects and even hummingbirds buzzing around your garden. Plants such as lavender, lobelia and clematis are great choices to attract insects.
