Now that you have moved into your new home, is the garden thriving?
If your plants are not looking as fresh and healthy as they were when you inspected the property, it may be as simple as reviewing your watering schedule.
Check out these handy hints to help bring the garden back to life.
Early riser
The best time to water your garden is in the morning. If you do it at night, the water can cause fungus to gather on the roots. Wet leaves can get diseases, too. The ideal time is 6am so plants absorb the water they need, and the excess evaporates during the day. Buy a hose timer if you like your sleep more than your plants.
Rule breakers
Good rules always have exceptions. If your plants appear stressed by the heat of the day, water them lightly in the evening. Also, new plants need more water to help them settle in.
Pouring down
Flower beds and vegetable gardens should get around 2cm weekly. So, keep an eye on the amount of rainfall you receive to avoid over-watering them. If you’re unsure whether they need water, stick a finger 5cm into the soil. If it’s dry down there, they need a drink.
Keep it mulched
Placing mulch on your beds will stop the evaporation of moisture from the soil. And that means your plant will not be as thirsty and thrive.
Pot luck
Plants in pots dry out much faster than those in the ground. So, be more diligent with their care. Usually, they’ll need watering once a day. In summer, they might need a couple of drinks.
