Apps designed to make moving house easy

Moving home is often said to be one of life’s most stressful moments; but these days there’s an app for that.

In fact, there are a lot of them.

With some planning and tech help, you shouldn’t find yourself staring at boxes in your new home and wondering whether they’re destined for the kids’ bedroom or the kitchen.

If you’re considering moving home, you may want to do a little due diligence on this end of the operation.

Beyond using apps, I’d also recommend using professional removalists and taking out insurance. And be aware if you help the removalists to pack or unpack – even out of kindness – you could void your insurance. So, just let the professionals get on with their job.

Here is my list of home moving apps. I hope you find it helpful.

Avvinue

You begin by filling out a questionnaire. Based on your answers, it creates a checklist of everything you need to do. It might need editing, but it makes light of a tedious organizational task. You can also book services through the app, such as shippers, removalists and pet transport.

Shyft Moving

Its goal is to help you get a quote for moving without someone coming over. You fill out a form and then jump online for a video call with a consultant. They’ll determine the number of boxes required and get you quotes.

Sortly

This app records every item in your home, capturing your photos of them and categorizing them by location. Once done, you share the data with your removalists. You can even put a value on each item and ask for extra special care.

Unpakt

Fill out its forms and wait for packing company quotes to roll in. You book your favored company on the app. Unpakt vets the companies beforehand and promises a price guarantee so long as you don’t change anything on the forms.

Moving Boxes

With this app, there’s no more hunting through boxes for stuff. If the youngest’s teddy bear has vanished, Moving Boxes knows where it is! It will also help you put each box in its correct location.

Dolly

Easy to use, Dolly is a booking service for small removalists who’ve been vetted.

Google Keep

This is a generalist list that’s got a great to-do function. And being Google, it allows you to share and edit that list with the rest of the family. Many similar apps, such as Evernote, do this job, too.

MakeSpace

A solution for downsizers: it will source professional movers who pack unwanted items and take them to a storage facility. You get photos of your belongings once they’re in storage. When you want them back, jump back on the app and ask.

OfferUp

When the time comes to pack your boxes, you might start discarding items that somehow avoided the declutter you did to prepare your home for sale. OfferUp exists to sell large and small items. It has a shipping facility for buyers if you want to offload large pieces of furniture.

Flying Ruler

If you’re worried the eight-seater sofa you love so much won’t get through the door of your next home, use Flying Ruler to find out. It’s like a tape measure, protractor and angle measurer all in one.

Google Maps & Yelp

If you’re moving to a new area and unpacking boxes, the last thing on your mind will be cooking. But the hordes will get hungry soon enough! Being able to find takeout or nearby restaurants will be a lifesaver.
