It’s amazing to think winter is already here; just in time for our electricity and gas prices to increase.

Escalating energy costs, plus rising food and fuel bills, suggest there’s never been a better time to adopt a few basic measures to keep your home warm during these cold months.

A well-insulated home is highly regarded by buyers, who appreciate this feature reduces energy use to warm you in the winter and keep you cool during the summer.

If you’re thinking of selling your home but are worried it might feel a little cold and lack atmosphere, we’ve come up with some great tips to help you.

Install heavy curtains

Up to 40% of the heat in your home can escape through the glass of your windows. You’ll get the best results from using heavy curtains or double-thickened pull-down blinds, which have been designed specifically to maximise insulation.

Thank you, fans

Don’t forget to change your fan to its winter setting so the blades push down the warm air on the ceiling. On a summer setting, the blades rotate in the opposite direction to take away the heat.

Floor flaws

If you have floorboards, cold air may be coming up through the cracks, undermining efforts to heat your home. If possible, get underneath the house and plug those pesky gaps with a sealant. If you’re considering installing floorboards, ask your builder to use underfloor insulation. A well-positioned rug may also help.

Crack the case

Walk around your home and look for small gaps around window sills and floorboards that allow warmth to seep away. Putting door seals around external and internal doors is a good idea.

Follow the warmth

Avoid placing your furniture against external walls. The warmest areas are the central points of your home. You’ll be amazed at the difference it will make if you organise the furniture layout to avoid the cold spots.

Here comes the sun

The warmth you capture during the day makes a huge difference to your heating needs at night. This is one reason why north-facing homes are so popular. Pull back the curtains, move furniture that blocks the windows and let the winter sun flood in.
