Create a great lawn with minimum effort

The excitement of finally living in your own home cannot be overstated for first-home buyers. It’s one of the most exciting times of your life, while also not without challenges and learning experiences.

One lesson you learn quickly is how to manage your garden, especially if you’re moving in during the late spring and summer months. The hot weather can turn lawns brown and wilt plants within days.

Everyone knows that a garden needs watering, but how much is optimal?

As an experienced real estate agent in your neighborhood, I’ve listed some essential tips for first-time owners to achieve a great lawn with minimum effort. You will have plenty else to do to settle into your new home.

Keep it green

It’s easy to overwater your lawn, it needs about 1 inch of water each week. For best results, thoroughly water the grass a couple of mornings a week only. Avoid doing this in the evenings as water will sit on the grassroots in the cool of night and introduce fungus.

Get to the roots

If you water deeper but less often, the roots will grow deeper. That’s true of most plants in your garden.

Check you’re doing it right

You should be able to push a screwdriver into your lawn easily. If not, the soil has compacted and needs to moisten.

Weed and feed

You can give your lawn a boost with commercial products that claim to “weed and feed”. It’s essential to pick one suitable for your type of lawn.

Not too short

A common mistake is cutting the grass short. Longer blades keep out weeds and make your grass stronger.
