When you see property articles in the media, they’re usually illustrated by couples or families talking about their property aspirations, or the wonderful dream home that they’ve just bought.
Rarely do we see another equally important facet of property ownership – the increasing number of men and women who choose to buy apartments on their own and achieve independence.
Of course, there’s a greater financial burden when only one wage maintains the mortgage, but it can be done if you are determined to own a property in your own right and choose carefully. For many, that’s downright exciting!
As an experienced local agent, I can think of many opportunities for an individual to enter the property market for the first time.
Apartments in urban areas are particularly popular with young people because of the proximity to entertainment, bars, cafes and restaurants.
If you’re thinking of buying an apartment, I’d be more than happy to discuss price options and market trends right now. And if you’re wondering if living alone is right you, here are three reasons why my single clients love it:
- You make the decisions. When you’re sharing a house or apartment, everything is a compromise. That becomes tiring. And let’s face it, you start to grow out of that lifestyle by your mid- to late 20s. With no need to negotiate territory on the fridge shelves, or who’ll take the next shower, you really do feel like you take control of your life.
- Alone doesn’t mean lonely. Many of my clients who buy their own place say they have expanded their social circle rather than restrict it to those they live with. And besides, what’s wrong with reading a book or watching a movie in your living room without interruption? That sounds like paradise to me.
- Time is your friend. Without the peer pressure of a share house, you can choose how you spend your time and the leisure pursuits or hobbies you wish to follow and have no one watching over your shoulder.
- Dance like nobody’s watching. Want to work out but don’t want anyone seeing you sweat? In your own apartment you can walk naked to the bathroom without comment, or bust out your craziest dance moves – just make sure you don’t do it in the middle of the night and wake the neighbors!
