When you’re a first-home buyer, the experience can feel a little confronting – advice comes from an overwhelming number of well-meaning sources and you face the daunting task of selecting an agent to help you navigate past the pitfalls of a purchase.
A third of all prospective home buyers are currently first-timers according to the National Association of Realtors, so if you are feeling a little isolated you’re not alone!
Hiring a great agent or broker is essential to a successful purchase, but choosing the right agent for you and your circumstances can feel daunting.
I understand how difficult finding the right agent can be when you’ve never done it before. While I’d be delighted to help you with your first purchase, it is important you feel confident that I’m the right agent for you.
So below are my six tips to finding a great agent to help you buy your next home:
- Do some research on the market yourself, seeking to discover agents who specialize in your area, and have a history of selling and buying properties similar to those that interest you.
- Seek word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and family and compare them to your research.
- Shortlist agents who specialize in your area and are most suitable for the relevant property and price bracket
- Speak with at least three agents. Each agent will have their own approach, but don’t let that throw you from your enquiries.
- Ask each agent the same questions – that way you can compare. A good agent will listen to what you need and ensure they answer all your questions to your satisfaction.
- Ask the agent if you can talk with a recent client. Ask the past client about how the agent performed in terms of their market knowledge, their communications skills and ability to negotiate the price.
