The most comfortable homes rely on several systems working together. Effective insulation, draught reduction, double glazing where available, good ventilation and efficient heating all help maintain a warm, dry indoor environment while reducing energy consumption.
Ventilation is particularly important. Everyday activities such as cooking, showering and drying clothes indoors can generate significant moisture. Managing that moisture helps reduce condensation and the risk of mould growth.
Landscaping Matters Too
Landscaping can influence winter performance more than many homeowners realise. Well-positioned trees and planting can provide shelter from prevailing winds while still allowing valuable winter sunlight to reach living areas.
At the same time, vegetation should be kept clear of cladding, gutters and roofing materials. Overgrown plants can trap moisture against exterior surfaces, contribute to mould growth and increase maintenance requirements. Good landscaping should support the home’s durability rather than create additional problems.

Durable homes rarely depend on a single product or upgrade. Instead, they rely on balance: a sound roof, effective drainage, a dry and ventilated roof space, well-maintained weatherproofing, controlled indoor moisture, efficient heating systems and appropriate insulation.
