Why Winter Weather Matters

The Building Envelope Tells the Story

The building envelope includes the roof, walls, foundations, windows, doors and floors—the components that separate indoor and outdoor environments. Heat can escape through any of these areas, particularly where materials meet and gaps develop over time.

Winter often highlights weaknesses first. Cracks in masonry, worn sealants, deteriorated weatherproofing and poorly fitted doors or windows can allow cold air and moisture to enter the home. These issues not only affect comfort but can also increase energy costs and contribute to long-term deterioration.

In some parts, reactive clay soils can expand and contract as moisture levels change, potentially affecting footings and foundations. Good drainage and sensible irrigation practices can help minimise these risks.

Heating Systems and Landscaping Matter Too

Heating systems contribute to a home’s overall performance just as cooling systems do in summer. Dirty filters, poorly maintained heaters and blocked vents can reduce efficiency and increase running costs.

However, effective winter comfort isn’t achieved through heating alone. Insulation, draught sealing, well-performing windows and adequate ventilation all help reduce heating demand. The most comfortable homes rely on multiple systems working together.

Landscaping can also influence winter performance. Well-positioned trees and vegetation can provide protection from cold winds while still allowing valuable winter sunlight to reach living areas.

At the same time, keep vegetation clear of walls, gutters and roofing materials. Overgrown plants can trap moisture, contribute to mould growth and increase maintenance requirements. Good landscaping should support the home’s durability rather than create additional problems.

Durable homes rarely depend on a single product or upgrade. Instead, they rely on balance: a sound roof, effective drainage, a dry and ventilated roof space, well-maintained seals and weatherproofing, controlled indoor moisture, efficient heating systems and appropriate insulation.

Winter provides an excellent opportunity to see how these elements work together. A home that stays warm, dry and comfortable during the colder months is often a home that will continue to perform well for years to come.
