After a wet winter, you need to check for pest problems

For many Australians, it’s been a long, wet winter that will have increased the possibility of pests such as mice and cockroaches finding warm refuge in the nooks and crannies of your home.

Spring is a great time to consider commissioning a pest inspection as part of your property’s maintenance program.

As any real estate agent will tell you, by looking after your home you can prevent small problems becoming big ones, and you’ll save thousands of dollars in unnecessary remediation costs.

If you’re thinking of selling your property this spring, or later on in summer, a pest inspection is a great idea. That’s because you’ll be able to give prospective buyers a true assessment of your home’s condition.

As a first step, walk around your home and watch for signs of where pests might enter the property. It’s possible ant nests may be under pavers or in the walls of your home, for example.

And when was the property last assessed for termites, the most destructive of pest invasions?

A pest inspection can cost between $150-$300 depending on the size of the home.

Pest controllers are regulated on a state basis. However, all treatment plans must comply with Australian Standard AS 3660.

Check that your chosen supplier is licensed and their work includes a warranty in case the pests don’t leave or return quickly.

Here are the most common pests that cause trouble:

Ants – With nests near or under the property, they seek out food sources. They’re most likely to be found in a kitchen or pantry while nesting under paving, roofing and in walls. Pest control for ants costs around $200 to $250.

Bed bugs – Bed bugs leave bites and welts that can cause allergic reactions. Treatment options include chemical powders and fumigation. Your bill for treatment will start at around $150.

Bees – Nests can be removed without chemicals. Occasionally, bees will swarm a home but then move on if they cannot find an appropriate location for a nest. So, wait a few days to see if the bees leave before calling a pest controller.

Cockroaches – Much like ants, cockroaches seek out food sources, as well as warmth, and they will quickly infest your home. Opened doors and windows in summer is an invitation for them. Treatments include chemical sprays and traps.

Rodents – Rats and mice are unnerving to have in your home. Their presence definitely feels like an invasion. And they also bring friends – fleas and lice. Worse, they carry disease. Removal costs approximately $350.

Possums – They look cute but can cause structural damage to ceilings and roofing. The removal solution should include blocking entry points in case they try to return.

Snakes – You need a licensed professional to remove a snake. Usually, you can leave them alone, but when they invade your space, call a snake-catcher.

Spiders – Redbacks and funnel web spiders should be removed, especially if you have children who love to play in the garden.

Termites – Call the experts the moment you see the tell-tale signs of termites – mud tubes, hollowed wood, discarded wings and buckling paint or flooring. Termite control costs around $200 per visit.
