The popularity of sci-fi shows and the fascination with Space Age architecture is alive and well in the United States.
Owners seeking to rebuild or remodel their homes continue to explore so-called Space Age designs, or more appropriately retro-futuristic designs that now come with all the energy-saving technologies developed over the past decade.
Back in the 60s, “space age designs” were the height of fashion. But now we’ve been to the moon and sent spacecraft into the far reaches of the universe, embracing these design principles is definitely going back to the future.
For those who love a little retro in their lives, and appreciate the sleek lines of the architecture, here are some of the most important features of a space age home:
The essentials – The building must have a sense of flow. Sleek, curving lines should dominate. Walls can be curved and the corners rounded off. Everything should feel fluid, even aerodynamic. Favorite exterior materials include stainless steel and chrome. (A little like a spacecraft). Right angles and pitched roofs are banned!
Open plan living – Inside, you should experience large living spaces that also “flow”. To some extent, we’ve adopted this architectural style in modern day homes. Think how the kitchen, dining and living areas in modern homes combine.
Light is everything – Huge glass windows are another feature of Space Age architecture. The aim is to not only ensure every room capitalizes on natural light but also to create an attachment between your interior haven and the gardens that surround it.
Because it’s the 60s – Split-level design, which is not as common in modern design, will enhance that retro feel of the building. Back in the day, those sunken living rooms were pretty cool.
Today’s tech – You don’t need to be misty-eyed about 60s technology, though. Our smart home systems more than fulfill the dream of a Space Age home. “While entertainment systems, room-based climate control and smart lighting would have seemed a world away, today they are easy to install and a good investment in any home.
