How to arrange furniture like a design pro

Arranging furniture can be a daunting task. It’s like a high-stakes game of Tetris, where the pieces are expensive and the goal is to create a space that is both stylish and functional.

But don’t worry, design professionals have a set of rules to help you achieve the perfect arrangement.

This becomes especially valuable when you’re preparing to sell your home, and you want to make sure that your presentation is perfect.

Here are six key guidelines to consider:

Allow for Easy Movement

No one wants to navigate a home like an obstacle course. Ensure there are clear pathways around your furniture. In high-traffic areas, aim for three to four feet of space between pieces. For less frequently used areas, two to three feet will suffice. Bedrooms ideally have four feet of clearance around the bed for comfortable movement.

Hang Artwork at the Right Height

A common mistake is hanging artwork too high. Aim for gallery height, around 1.4m from the floor. Above sofas, hang artwork a bit lower, ensuring the bottom of the piece is roughly 25cm above the top of the sofa back. This allows for comfortable viewing while seated.

Define Zones in Large Rooms

If you have a spacious open-plan living area, avoid spreading your furniture out too much. Instead, use rugs and furniture to create distinct zones. For instance, define a separate area for games with a small table and chairs, or establish a cosy reading nook in a corner.

Choose the Right Rug Size

Rugs play a crucial role in defining spaces and anchoring furniture arrangements.1 In a living room conversation area, ensure the front legs of all seating and tables are on the rug. For dining areas, the rug should be large enough to accommodate chairs even when they’re pulled out from the table.

Prioritise Functionality

Before you start moving furniture, think about how you actually use the space. Do you often eat in the living room? Opt for lower-side tables to easily accommodate drinks and snacks. Love putting your feet up after a long day? Position a stool or coffee table within easy reach of your sofa.

Don’t Be Afraid to Break the Rules

While these guidelines provide a solid foundation, remember that they are not set in stone. Sometimes, breaking the rules can add a unique and personal touch to your space. If you have a piece you love, find a way to make it work, even if it means deviating from conventional wisdom. Ultimately, the goal is to create a space that reflects your individual style and meets your specific needs.
