Is your home pet-friendly? Here’s how to do it

Pets are more than just animals – they’re cherished members of our families. And we want our homes to be havens not just for ourselves but our furry companions, too.

Designing pet-friendly interiors goes beyond just minimising hazards. It’s about creating a space that meets their needs while maintaining a stylish and comfortable environment for everyone else.

When you’re considering selling your home, many agents will advise you to eradicate the evidence of pets. Buyers are a little reluctant to pursue a home where pets have left their mark.

For example, we’d need to expel pet smalls from the home as a first step. That’s probably the hardest challenge. But we also need to pay attention to any damage a pet might have done to floorboards and the backyard, and remove water and food bowls before any viewings.

Of course, this is purely for the exercise of maximising the value of your property once you’ve decided it’s time to sell. Until then, here are some ideas for making your home pet-friendly.

Designing pet-friendly interiors

When designing a pet-friendly interior, prioritise durable and easy-to-clean flooring like hardwood or tile, and consider stain-resistant rugs for comfort. Choose furniture made with durable materials such as leather or microfiber, and use washable slipcovers for added protection and style.

Cat owners should utilise vertical space with cat trees and shelves to satisfy their climbing instincts. Create designated pet zones for feeding and resting. Conceal litter boxes in cabinets or under benches to maintain a stylish and harmonious living space for both pets and their humans.

Prioritise Outdoor Access

Ensure a harmonious environment by providing safe spaces for your pets, like crates or cosy corners, especially if they are young or anxious. Prioritise outdoor access with a fenced yard or a secure balcony whenever possible. Keep pets entertained and prevent destructive behavior with stimulating toys, puzzle feeders and regular playtime. Thoroughly pet-proof your home by securing loose wires, covering trash cans, and storing cleaning supplies out of reach.

Pet-friendly Home Search

When searching for a new home with your pet in mind, prioritise key features such as a fenced yard for safe outdoor play, proximity to parks and walking trails for exercise and socialisation, and pet-friendly policies that accommodate your furry friend. Consider the convenience of nearby amenities like veterinarians and groomers.

Also, pet-friendly communities extend the welcoming atmosphere beyond your home, offering amenities like dog parks and walking trails for exercise and socialisation. These communities often provide convenient pet-related services, such as grooming and dog walking, and may even host pet-themed events and activities, creating a vibrant and supportive environment for both pets and their owners.
