Six tips for rejuvenating your spring garden

As the spring weather takes hold, it’s time to get out in the garden and begin preparing for the warmer days.

Creating and enjoying your own private haven doesn’t happen without a little bit of effort, of course.

Whether you love colourful flowers, privacy hedges, or vegetables and fruit in your garden, spring is always an important time to boost the soil and prepare your  plants for the summer heat.

If you’re planning to sell your home over the spring or summer period, it’s a great idea to make your garden a true feature to impress buyers.

Today’s buyers are putting a premium on homes that feature beautiful private gardens, whether they’re buying a detached house or an apartment. And this is the perfect time to showcase your green thumb!

Here are six pointers to help you prepare your garden for spring and summer.

Dead Wood

Remove dead plants and any debris that has accumulated during winter. This will help reduce the risk of your plants  attracting pests or suffering disease.

Chop Back

Now is the right time to prune roses, fruit trees and shrubs. This will encourage

new growth and improve the overall health of your plants.

Turbocharge the Soil

Ultimately, everything comes from the soil. It can deplete in winter and need additional nutrients to ensure your plants grow strongly.

Much Mulch

Mulching your garden beds will help suppress weeds and retain moisture. Put 2cm to 4cm of mulch around the base of your plants, and you will protect their roots from extreme heat.

Break Up

Divide and replant perennials to prevent them becoming crowded, which stunts their growth because they fight over access to soil nutrients and sunlight.

Pesky Pests

Watch for pests hiding in your plants. It’s a particularly bad time for stink bugs, which hang onto the green shoots of fruit trees and reduce the potential crop yield.
