While most garages are used for cars, storage and tools, there’s no need to keep these items crammed together in a messy and dirty array.
Better yet, garages can be completely transformed into a home office, gym, hobby room, teenage retreat or guest room.
Homeowners happy to stick with a thorough reorganisation of their garage should start by throwing, or giving away, all items no longer needed or wanted.
When doing this declutter, separate similar items together such as sporting equipment, Christmas decorations, and garden tools.
Now ensure there’s space in the garage for all these items, and there are endless ways to find storage solutions.
Think of the items you use the most, perhaps workshop tools, and secure an accessible place to allocate them. Think: multiple racks above a workshop bench, floor-to-ceiling cabinets, a pegboard, and open shelving.
The opposite is true for annual items such as Christmas decorations with racks set high on a wall, or floor-to-ceiling cupboards, being ideal.
Don’t forget ceiling possibilities either, especially if there are already rafters there. Storing large or light items such as rakes and bicycles on either current rafters or new racks ensures the rest of the garage remains uncluttered.
If you are lucky enough to have an extra garage maybe go even further, and consider making this space an office or similar.
With working from home the new normal, transforming the garage into a studio or even a beauty salon is relatively easy to achieve.
Just remember that you may need council approval to do so if employees or clients visit the space.
But a garage-home office or work space only needs to be well-insulated, have strong Wi-fi and energy connections and room for desks and cupboards.
You will want a little extra space for a gym, hobby room or teenage retreat so you can add in work-out equipment, a tv and couch.
