Did you know that switching from gas cooking to electricity can help save the environment?
Research now shows that every time you ignite a gas ring, your stove will push out unburned methane that’s 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide (C02).
And, according to a Forbes magazine report, the number of gas stoves being used in the US will emit as much carbon dioxide as 500,000 cars over 20 years.
So, it’s not all the cows’ fault! While each cow does produce almost 100kg of methane a year (and methane from cows is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide) it doesn’t hang around in the atmosphere as long.
Prioritising environmental sustainability when you are building or renovating a home today makes good sense as buyers have started putting a premium on energy-efficient and ecologically-friendly homes. A “green home” is no longer the domain of only the prestige market.
Ruling out a gas stove and opting for an induction cooktop will also get a tick from the Climate Council of Australia.
It says more than 5 million Australian homes are currently connected to a gas network. At home, the 17% of the nation’s gas supply we consume produces 2% of national emissions.
Should you reconsider installing a new gas stove or think about replacing your current model?
Cost-savings
The Climate Council says you’ll save $1,000 annually by switching from gas to the most efficient electricity alternatives. You may even qualify for a state government rebate to make the move.
Asthma claims
Gas cooking can induce asthma because of the fumes it releases into the kitchen. The Climate Council says it can be the equivalent of an asthma sufferer living in a household that smokes cigarettes. Cooking with gas is said to be responsible for 12% of childhood asthma.
Kitchen myth
The price of induction stoves has fallen dramatically in the past few years as the technology has improved. Arguably, their sleek glass tops are more aesthetic than the metal grates and gas rings of a gas cooker.
Hot and cold
Gas heaters consume up to 40% of all household gas, while a quality reverse-cycle air conditioning unit is likely heat and cool for half the price.
Call the experts
Swapping out your gas stove is not a DIY job. You’ll need a qualified gas plumber to decommission your gas cooker and an electrician to complete the replacement installation. It’s best to discuss your plans with your electrician before making any purchases.
