Create the perfect gateway to your home

A striking gateway at the front of your home will not only enhance security but could boost your home value by up to 5% when the time comes to sell.

Buyers see a gateway as a premium feature if it adds to the attraction of the home and ensures the safety of your vehicles.

There are an almost countless number of options to choose from. The most durable driveway gates are metal and powder-coated steel. And, of course, it’s hard to beat the spectacular but very expensive option of wrought iron.

The most expensive models will open with a remote control used from the car, and then shut automatically once you’re inside. You’ll need an electrician to install these models.

Possibly, the gates with the least pulling power when it comes to attracting buyers are wooden-slatted gates. These often struggle in the weather and usually require a new lick of paint every couple of years. However, they are quick and cheap to replace.

The American website HomeAdvisor claims that a high-quality gate can boost home values by up to 5% because of their kerbside appeal and the security factor.

If you want to enhance the frontage of your home before selling, then installing a new gate that opens and closes automatically will deliver some star power.

Here are six options to explore:

Sliding gates – These gates slide horizontally along a track or cantilever and work perfectly in limited spaces. They’re secure and can accommodate wide openings. However, they require a long fence line that is clear of plants so they can slide back. Usually, they’re made from steel, aluminium or timber.

Swing gates – Operating like single or double doors, they offer a classic look and can create a grand entrance. Generally quieter than sliding gates, and they require less maintenance. However, they do need ample space so they can open freely without hitting anything. Their most popular materials are wood, wrought iron, steel and aluminium.

Timber gates – These are often “picket” or “slat” in style and provide a natural, classic look. They’re highly customisable with various stains and paints but require maintenance.

Aluminium gates – These come in a “slat” or “tubular” style and have a clean, contemporary look. Usually, they are lightweight and resistant to rust and corrosion, making them excellent for coastal areas.

Steel gates – If you’re looking for strength or an industrial look, you can’t go past steel gates. However, they can be very heavy and require structural support.

Wrought iron gates – Elegant, decorative and usually expensive. Wrought iron gates are durable and strong, and they provide good security. The number of intricate patterns and embellishments you can choose is almost endless.
