Many folks find buying a rug a real conundrum – what is the best size for a room? Is it cool to put a rug on top of carpet? And is it supposed to match the carpet, the furnishings or can it be a random statement of color and pattern?
It’s certainly a lot easier to make a purchase if you have wooden floors because then the choice is really only about size and color.
When you consider all the factors that need to go into choosing the right rug for a room, you can see the stakes are pretty high!
One method of selection is to dismiss all the patterns and styles that you don’t think will work, so you’ll find the right rug by a process of elimination.
If that sounds a little loose, here are seven tips.
Size matters – The most common mistake is to choose a rug that’s too small. Knowing the measurements of the room, or the space you’ve designated, is essential. Nevertheless, once you’re in the store it’s not so simple. If in doubt, interior designers suggest selecting one size larger than you think necessary. This way, the rug will always anchor the room.
Don’t match everything – Interior designers say it’s a mistake to try to match the rug to its surroundings. It’s not necessary and a failed attempt is going to make the room look worse.
Right materials – The type of material should reflect the purpose of the room. If you’re putting one in a beach house, you might discount a heavy, dark woollen rug. A rug should reflect the design and vibe you’re trying to achieve.
Fit for purpose – Consider the amount of foot traffic. In busy areas of the home, you probably want a dark rug that will not easily show the wear and tear of everyday life.
Dining room – If you’re buying a rug for the dining room, make sure it’s large enough for all the chairs to be on it when guests are seated. This stops chair legs scraping against floorboards, and the chairs being half-on, half-off, the rug.
Living room – Your couch doesn’t need to have a rug completely underneath it. However, aesthetically, you should place the rug under the front legs.
Hiding the rug – Don’t hide a rug under the coffee table. It adds nothing to the room.
