When you hear the words “chaos” and “garden” in the same sentence, you’d be forgiven for thinking the backyard would be full of weeds and dead plants.
But “chaos” has become a new term for transforming a garden into an unruly treasure trove of plants.
As an experienced real estate agent in your neighborhood, I’m often asked about ways to improve outdoor spaces. And with summer quickly upon us, I’m getting asked for this type of advice all the time.
For many of my clients, a low-maintenance garden is desirable.
And this is one of the best features of a chaos garden.
So, forget meticulously manicured lawns and perfectly symmetrical flower beds.
Chaos gardening, also known as wilding, allows plants to grow freely and organically.
The key advantages of a chaos garden are:
- Low-Maintenance – Minimal watering, weeding, and pruning.
- Eco-Friendly – Native plants in a chaos garden attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
- Natural Beauty – The diverse mix of flowers, grasses and foliage creates a vibrant landscape that changes with the seasons.
Below, I’ve listed some tips for creating your own garden.

My tips for creating chaos in your backyard:
- Choose your style – Decide the chaos you want to create: native plants, wildflowers, pollinator-friendly, or edible plants.
- Research – Check out all the pre-mixed seed packs suited to your local climate and soil conditions.
- Location – Choose a sunny position with well-draining soil. Make sure your plants have sufficient space to flourish.
- Your soil – Remove existing vegetation and enrich the soil with compost or other organic matter.
- Scatter-gun – Sprinkle your seed mix evenly over the prepared soil and water regularly until they germinate.
