How to design your backyard studio

Are you thinking of building a small granny flat or stand-alone studio in your backyard?

Part of the fun is coming up with some great interior design looks once the construction is completed.

The trick is to consider its purpose first, followed by budget, size and accessibility.

And you don’t have to spend big to end up with a great-looking space, because there are plenty of budget-priced possibilities available online or in large department stores.

Whatever the studio will be used for, ensure it includes plenty of power points, large windows (possibly double-glazed) and if possible and depending on where you live, air conditioning and heating.

Carpeted floors in cold areas are also a must.

Guest suite

Pretend like the studio is a hotel and go from there.

Think a soothing colour palette, such as creams and pastel blues and greens; abundant towels and other bathroom items; and an extra-large, comfortable bed with quality linen.

In cool locations, ensure guests have electric blankets and doonas

Don’t forget scented candles, lamps, rugs, at least one comfy chair and greenery of some kind, preferably a vase of flowers.

A stack of books and magazines is also a nice idea.

Home office

While home office studios still need to be appealing, they also must be practical.

So think more towards a large desk with space for a computer and other electronic appliances plus drawers and cupboards for extra stationery, folders and files.

A comfortable quality desk chair is a must, but you may even need a few. If clients are visiting this area, you’ll need more practical, but attractive, space for them too.

This is where greenery can be a great idea plus it can be a soothing and inspirational work space idea.

For freelance workers and those with an ABN it may be worth checking with your accountant whether you are able to claim such home office designs as a tax deduction.

Hobby areas and teen retreats

Backyard studios will be different again if used for these purposes with a mixture of practical and comfortable space needed, depending on the hobbies and ages involved.

Think a comfy couch; room for a large television and computer.

Easy-to-clean floors such as timber or tiles are highly recommended, as is plenty of natural light.
