Interior designs trends with staying power

It’s always fun to keep tabs on the latest interior design fashions, even if you’re not inclined to rush out and buy the hottest homewares or gadgets.

If you love social media, especially Instagram and TikTok, you might be forgiven for thinking that interior design trends come and go in a virtual blink of an eye.

But some styles do stick around and have a positive impact on buyers.

Back in black

It’s still the “it” colour. The phrase “X is the new black” seems to have been with us for years. But black is still a favourite for interior designers because it’s striking when done right. It does show grease marks, especially in the kitchen.

As nature intended

Natural stone is a firm 2023 favourite, and it coincides with the negative publicity about dust from synthetic stone benchtops that cause health issues for the workers who cut them to size. Natural materials never go out of fashion. If you take this path, ask for rounded edges.

Subtle splash

We’ve noticed in America that some kitchen renovations feature splashbacks and benchtops of the same material, and they look stunning! If you like the sound of this, we’d recommend you use light-coloured or lightly-patterned materials.

Roman influence

Fluted tiles have become a thing! They seem to have come from nowhere, so much so that you might even need to Google them to see what they look like. Designers have made this style of tile the upmarket, “must-have” for a bathroom renovation.

Cast-iron fave

You don’t need to convince anyone in this part of the world about the benefits of sheet metal. But over in America, hand-hewn metal and the so-called “Brutalist” style are back in favour. Small pieces, such as candlestick holders and coffee tables, might quench your thirst for this trend.

Painted ceilings

There are a gazillion photos on social media of painted ceilings. While most homeowners stick to white, if you want to break with convention you’ll be in step with the fashionistas. It may not be the best idea if you’re considering selling.
