Making a statement with indoor plants

If you want to make a fashion statement in your home, indoor plants are a great way to do it, sassing up old or tired bathrooms and kitchens without going to the huge expense of a renovation.

And they’re a fashion statement that can turn heads when selling your home.

Indoor plants are in vogue once more, especially among first-time millennial buyers, so it’s worth considering how a little bit of greenery can lift your home.

These are some of our top tips:

Social climbers

Climbers are great in the bathroom. Pop one in a hanging basket but keep its growth in check. Don’t let its suckers latch on to the wall, or you’ll have to touch up the paintwork when you remove it. There’s no shortage of choices for a hanging basket. English ivy and the ocean spider plant are popular.

Aloe there

A low-maintenance succulent, Aloe vera thrives if you leave it on a windowsill in the sun. It doesn’t dominate but adds a lovely splash of colour.

Blooming beautiful

The anthurium is much-loved for its waxy, heart-shaped red flowers. It loves sunlight and a humid atmosphere, which also makes this a perfect bathroom choice.

Peace, man

The peace lily is arguably the most prevalent of all indoor plants and will brighten any part of your home. It loves the sun but it does get thirsty, so water it regularly.

Luscious leaves

The thick green leaves of the aglaonema, or Chinese Evergreen Plant, make this a showstopper. It thrives in humid areas, so anywhere in the bathroom or near the kitchen sink is ideal. In direct sunlight or shade, it will love you back.
