Landmark annual events often subconsciously signal a change of season or a favourite time of year. The Melbourne Cup is a sign that summer is coming, and the first ball of the Boxing Day cricket test means the nation is officially on holiday.
You also know the end of the year is fast approaching when paint manufacturers release their Colours of the Year for the following 12 months.
For those who love the heartbeat of interior design, these colours also influence fashionable themes and furnishings.
After two years of green domination to promote environmental themes and bring the outdoors indoors, this year’s selection is a mix of neutrals, warmth and the dramatic.
If you’re looking to sell your home this summer or in the popular autumn sales period, redecorating in one of these fashionable colours is likely to attract additional buyer interest and hopefully maximise the price you achieve.
This list of top colours from 2023 reflects the trends tipped by six global paint manufacturers. And while you don’t need to buy from any of them, their selection may inspire you to brighten your home in ways you had not imagined.
Redend Point
Popular paint maker Sherwin-Williams has nominated a blend of beige and blush as its 2023 Colour of the Year. It believes we’re not ready to give up on the earthy tones that have dominated paint fashion for the past two years. Redend Point makes any space “safe, calming and grounded”, it says.
Raspberry Blush
A big departure from the environmental theme, Benjamin Moore’s raspberry blush is a stunning, in-your-face red with a hint of orange (in other words, raspberry!). The maker says “statement colours are back” and claims it looks great as trim, on walls and ceilings. (Not sure about the ceilings.)
Terra Rosa
As the name suggests, this Dunn-Edwards paint is a soothing pink that can be used as a neutral. The company says Terra Rosa offers “prettiness and drama” suitable for living areas and bedrooms.
Blank Canvas
No points for the name, but this Behr Colour of the Year is a lovely creamy shade of white that you’ll be able to match with anything. It’s ideal for a home office or a bedroom that you want to sass with colourful furnishings.
Vining Ivy
Glidden’s selection is a tranquil blend of deep blues and greens that will give any room warmth and depth. A statement colour, it’s ideal if you want minimal furnishings in a room.
Spanish Moss
Manufacturer Krylon is still hanging on to the green feel, claiming it to be the new neutral. Spanish Moss is another tip of the hat to nature. Matching colours might include earthy or rustic hues that retain the nature theme.
