Settling the debate: real V artificial Christmas tree

Preparing your home to be on the market in the weeks before Christmas often raises questions of around Holiday decorations.

While it’s fun to have a home that’s primed for Santa on the market, it’s also important to remember not to overwhelm prospective buyers with too much sparkle and tinsel.

Remember that you want prospective buyers to envision their future in your home rather than be distracted by your determination to make Santa’s sleigh park at your chimney.

Sometimes, it’s a great idea to restrict your decorations to an elegantly dressed tree. But should it be a real or artificial one: that’s an all-too-common debate.

In keeping with the Holiday spirit, I’ve compared the advantages of each in the hope it might settle any argument in your household before the festivities begin.

Real trees:

The annual pilgrimage to choose and purchase a real tree is all part of the seasonal fun. Wandering through a nursery or tree farm is a potent symbol of the joy to come. For many families, the Holidays are all about tradition and nothing signals that more than a natural spruce or fir tree.

There’s also nothing quite like the scent of a natural tree that fills the home during the festive period. The merest hint of pine can conjure up memories of family gatherings.

In the name of sustainability, it’s easy to recycle a real tree, of course. And that should never be discounted in these days of environmental responsibility.

Artificial trees:

These have the benefit of allowing you to choose a tree that’s perfect for your home. There are no shortage of alternatives, as any scroll through amazon.com will show. You can select a green plastic tree that does a fair impersonation of a natural fir or purchase one of silver or green tinsel.

For the budget-conscious, an artificial tree is cheaper, and you don’t have to keep spending cash each year to buy a new one.

There’s no need to water the tree to keep it alive or continually clean up the pine leaves that fall onto the carpet.

Fire is a higher risk in winter as folks enjoy log fires and use electric heaters more frequently. A plastic tree is less flammable and a safer choice.
