Six ways to give a room personality

It’s a lot of fun to redecorate if you’re bored with a room or you’ve just bought a new home and want to add some of your personality to it.

Sometimes, though, it’s hard to know where to start.

Common questions include: “what are the best colors?” And: “how can I best convey my style or taste when decorating?”

Of course, there are a million solutions to these challenges but here are a few tips to get you under way.

Know when to stop
You want elegant sufficiency in a room. Too many pieces of art or furniture can leave a room cluttered and feeling small.

What’s your style?

Are you a fan of the art deco period, or do you love elegant minimalist lines of modern furniture, similar to those offered in Ikea? If you’re drawing a blank to this question, jump on Pinterest and see which styles excite you.

Mix and match

You can mix styles, it’s even considered quite trendy these days. But if you’re furnishing your first room or home, stick with one style and build up your confidence.

Color conundrum

Some folks have a natural talent for picking colors. But if you struggle with the choice, opt for neutrals such as whites and creams and instead highlight your walls with artwork.

Personality pieces

You should use object d’art and souvenirs you picked up while traveling, reflecting your personal history. This is a great way to inject your personality into a room. Alternatively, seek vintage or older pieces that might remind you of your childhood.

Still struggling?

Make your project more fun by visiting flea markets and vintage furniture stores for inspiration. Get a sense of the history of pieces you like rather than focus only on their aesthetic. Lamps, rugs and cushions are an excellent place to start. Don’t forget to take photos as part of your research.
