One of the challenges with preparing your home before a sale is the essential declutter designed to help give prospective buyers the best possible impression of your property.
Nothing impacts on a buyer’s perception of room size more than clutter. Not only is it unsightly, it leaves buyers with the impression the room isn’t big enough for its purpose.
One of the biggest challenges in a family home is the garage. Usually, it’s either a man cave or full of bikes, surfboards, and other large items that crowd in and undermine the sense of space.
While a garage certainly isn’t at the top of everyone’s list of essential features in a home, it’s amazing how many people hesitate if the garage fails to live up to expectations.
So, here are four ideas for turning your garage from chaos central to an organised storage area.
No hiding place
Items such as mowers are not going to disappear magically during your sales campaign. So, it may be a good idea to rent space with a storage company on a short-term basis for the period that buyers conduct their inspections. Alternatively, ask your neighbours if they’d mind storing it for you – in return for mowing their lawn.
No parking
On inspection days, remove your cars and park them on a nearby street. A great garage can feel small with two vehicles jammed in there.
Wash the floor
Several excellent commercial cleaning products are designed to remove oil and stains from the typical garage cement floor which can give it a nice spruce up. .
Install shelving
You can install basic solutions to tidy away items such as skateboards, pots of paint and the like. Consider freestanding shelving that you construct using nuts and bolts from flatpacks or wall-shelving. There are also some great specialist storage options available from hardware stores for awkwardly shaped things like bikes and gardening equipment. And large plastic boxes – some which have wheels – can help make any space look tidier. (And make it easier to move to your next place.)
