$2.6m to increase Pacific People’s homeownership

Recent data shows only 21% of our Pacific Peoples in New Zealand own their own home.

In response to this alarmingly low rate, the government has committed to spending $2.64 million over the next three years on improving finance and property education.

It aims to improve the housing outcome of Pacific people in Aotearoa through a free course called the Sorted Pacific Peoples Pathways to Home Ownership.

The course has been designed specifically for Pacific Peoples by the Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission and is financed by the Ministry for Pacific Peoples.

Project specialist Liline Hewett said the course covers various homeownership options and financial planning.

Ms Hewitt said owning your own home had many benefits, including creating a greater sense of security for families.

“Many Pacific Peoples want to own their own home and increase their financial literacy,” she said. “It’s important this programme teaches these skills and resonate with Pacific families so they connect with it.”

A pilot course last December received overwhelmingly positive feedback from its 31 participants.

Te Ara Ahunga Ora has engaged Skills Update Training and Education Group to facilitate the program.
