Survey finds kitchens are super-hot

If you’re seeking a top-dollar result when you sell your home, there’s no better way of guaranteeing that result than renovating your kitchen.

A recent survey by the website Houzz has found that a desire to have a state of the art kitchen has never been stronger. It was the most renovated area of the home during the pandemic with average spending of $20,000+.

If you believe a new kitchen would help maximise the value of your home at sale, then you wouldn’t be alone..

Some 50% of respondents said they replaced all their appliances. Two-in-five changed their plumbing and electrical set-ups – an expensive process. Some 40% increased the size of their kitchen, and one-third say they moved or added walls. Their upgrade list also included new benchtops, taps, sinks and splashbacks.

As a busy agency in our area, we’d say these changes mirror the current hot buttons for buyers. They’re looking for a five-star kitchen that fulfils their desire to entertain friends and family.

If you’re thinking of renovating your kitchen before selling, or you’ve just moved into a new home and want to upgrade the kitchen, here’s a quick list of hints for you. We hope you find it helpful.

Kitchens open on to decks

The research suggests the walls are starting to go up around kitchens again rather than the full open plan. The new trend for 2021 is the kitchen that opens on to a deck or patio.

Bigger splashbacks

The four-inch strip of glass is out.. Instead, splashbacks are going all the way up to the hanging wall cabinets. And forget big and bold colours. Whites and neutrals are in, which might explain the next point.

Fantasy island

Cutting-edge kitchen designers are now suggesting you don’t match your island bench with the rest of the kitchen. It should make a statement rather than blend in.

Cabinet crazy

Storage is a big thing this year. You can’t have enough of it. Why? Stocking up for another pandemic lockdown is one theory. Houzz claims four times the amount of storage is being built into a kitchen than two or three years ago.

Walk-in pantry

Everyone wants to walk into their pantry this year. Butler pantries and hidden preparation areas are the next level.

Vinyl va-va-voom

Expensive wooden floorings are making way to patterned vinyl. Also back are ceramic and porcelain tiles.
