Five creepy ideas to turn your dream home into a Halloween nightmare

Halloween is becoming a growing phenomenon in Australia, and Covid lockdowns have made us conscious of the importance of neighbourly and fun activities for kids. But if you’re struggling to prepare home for Halloween, we completely get it! Being cool and creepy takes effort.

So, if the kids have been on your back about Halloween, now is the time to act. Here’s some super-scary tips to turn your dream home into a nightmare!

  1. Make a plan: Don’t arrive at the decorations store and go mad with the credit card, buying everything that looks dark and evil. Instead, make a plan of how you’d like to decorate your front yard, and then shop with focus.
  2. Pick your poison: Stick to one theme. Don’t scatter-gun your porch with zombies, vampires and ghouls. Choose one sinister direction and execute without mercy.
  3. Crazy clutter: Avoid making your display too busy. Cluttering pumpkins, creepy crawlies and fake spider webs will lack impact. Know when to stop, which is hard because Halloween is so much fun.
  4. Scary sounds: Stream some super-creepy soundtracks and play them on repeat over a Bluetooth speaker. Spotify’s four minutes of “Scary Clown Laughing” is a total freak-out. “Evil Girl” is even worse, which is why it’s had 1.2 million downloads. The “Sad Monster Piano” is pretty good, too
  5. Low-level lighting: Invest in striplights with a remote control or app to manage the colours and brightness to really create a mood. Avoid lights that are white and bright. Remember, the aim is to creep out the neighbours’ kids and plunging them into darkness can be an awesome way to terrify them.
