Summer is already here and the warmer weather offers the opportunity to complete a few jobs around the house.
There are several simple tasks you can do without working up a sweat and spoiling your relaxation time. As experienced local real estate agents, we’re firm believers in tackling the small jobs ultimately adds up to a significant improvement in your home.
This means that you’re not only working towards maximising the value of your biggest financial asset, but you’re also in a great position when you decide it’s time to climb the property ladder.
Here are five ways to improve your home and ease the burden of ongoing maintenance.
- Keep your garden in great shape – The heat of the summer and can put stress on your plants. Rather than remembering to water them each evening, install an irrigation system or buy a smart sprinkler at the local hardware shop so you can set and forget. If you love your technology, you’ll find one that can be controlled on a phone app. Both projects are low-cost and will be easy to complete.
- Everyone on deck! – If you’ve delayed installing a deck because of the time it takes, summer staycations can be a great time to get started. Check-out composite decking kits. These are pre-cut and easy to install with no special tools required. Add some shade, and you’ll have the makings of a beautiful entertaining area.
- Sparkling paths – Over colder months, dirt and mould build up on the driveway and paths around your property. So, hire or consider buying a water pressure cleaner and spray away the grime. You may find that the mould is harder to shift because it leaves a dark stain on some surfaces. Check out your hardware store for a variety of chemical solutions that promise to remove these marks first and then on a hot day, spray away.
- Get on the grass – Maintaining a lawn is a year-round exercise. Take a few minutes each day to pull out weeds and bindies. After a couple of weeks, you’ll be amazed at what you’ve achieved. A number of products will zap the weeds and feed your lawn. A word of caution: buy the right one for the type of grass you have. The six most common grasses in Australia are Buffalo, Couch, Kikuyu, RTF Tall Fescue, Sir Grange and hybrid Bermuda. Please don’t cut your lawn super short as this puts it under strain in hot weather.
- Have the pool cleaned – Sometimes, it’s a good idea to bite the bullet and hire a professional pool cleaner or pay for an automated system and quality cover. This way, you’ll spend only a few moments on maintenance this summer and the rest of the time enjoying yourself in the water.
