Prepare your home for summer with these five small jobs

The evenings are getting longer and the days warmer as we head towards spring, which is always a time of great optimism for me.

It’s a time when the real estate market emerges from its winter slumber and when I recommend my clients get a few odd jobs done around the home so they can enjoy the blue skies and summer sun.

Clients who are thinking of selling their home in the short-term, a late spring and early summer campaign is a great idea.

Homes and gardens are at their best during this time of the year. And more importantly, buyers share that sense of optimism and renewal.

So if you’re looking to put your home on the market soon, here are five great ideas to help you prepare.

Get into the garden – This is the best time to plants vegetables and plants such as chillies so they’re ready to pick in early summer. If you do this now, you could well have two crops before the onset of winter. Spring blossoms in the front garden will give you some serious street appeal. Dust off your garden fork and aeriate your lawn. Give it a good feed of fertiser, too. When you mow, don’t leave the grass too short. It should be kept a tad longer until the heat arrives.

Double-down on your deck – Nothing says summer like a lazy Sunday afternoon on the desk, enjoying a barbeque with friends. If it’s looking a little weather beaten, you can pressure hose to strip it of any fungus, and then give it a light sand. Once that’s done, restain and finish with a coating of deck oil for a perfect finish.

A brush with colour – This is the perfect time to revitalise the exterior of your home with a fresh coat of paint. Primary colours and black and fashionable for front doors right now. Check your windows and sills and see if they need maintenance. If you take on this job now, you won’t have to battle the heat of summer. I always recommend a professional painter for work that involves heights.

Install lighting – Personally, I love the look of solar-powered lighting in a front and back garden, especially if it edges the footpaths. You can also use it to emphasise features such as beautiful tree. This lighting also serves to enhance the security of your home, which might be a concern when you go on holiday.

Keep carpets clean – After the wet and windy days we’ve endured this winter, this is a great time to organise for your carpets to be professionally cleaned. You take on this task yourself, but using experts with quality equipment will always end in a better outcome.
